Professional Interpreting

I recently had the experience of being interpreted for when I was speaking with someone of a different language. It was very enlightening into the experience of doctors and patients.

I found that my mind tended to wander and several times I completely lost track of the conversation. It really shed light into the importance of our jobs and the requirement to do it well.

A common mistake is thinking that because an interpreter views a comment as irrelevant or unimportant, it doesn't need to be interpreted. Everything must be interpreted. A good rule of thumb is that the conversations should happen just as they would if you weren't there (language barriers notwithstanding of course).

Be sensible to the mood of the person you are interpreting for. Sometimes we as interpreters need to learn how to appropriately connect with the patients, clients, etc. in order make the best of an interprting session.
